Do you ‘tweet’? It seems like half the modern world does with the remainder wondering ‘What’s the point?’, and I don’t blame them. Why would anyone want to discuss what they had for breakfast with a virtual stranger? It’s just another vehicle to pander to the narcissist in all of us. I thought that way too until one day curiosity got the better of me. I set up my profile and started ‘tweeting’ with people I share common interests with and whom I thought could help with my business.

By exchanging conversations on Twitter it wasn’t long before I started to develop relationships with many interesting, friendly, funny, supportive people worldwide who want to knowledge share in short bursts of 140 characters. Among them I found my accountant, web designer, many business associates and a sprinkling of clients. I expect that to continue.

Twitter has quickly become one of the most popular and powerful forums in social media. Tweets are delivered in real-time with news travelling so fast and wide that by the time it has reached traditional mediums, it is practically old news. You have direct access to celebrities, political figures and industry experts in a way that was not possible before, and in return, trends and opinions can be gauged by simply asking ‘What are you doing?’. Small and big businesses are using Twitter to engage with their audience and make contacts on a scale much wider than their local network, and it’s achieving results.

So the doubters among you don’t write it off just yet – I urge you to take a look and see what it’s all about for yourself. It could play an important role in your business marketing strategy.
